Use of Coordinate Reference Systems in Uinta

A coordinate reference system (CRS) is the way that a location on the ellipsoidally shaped Earth is converted to coordinate values (i.e. latitude and longitude) and displayed on a flat, two-dimensional surface, e.g. screen or paper.  The CRS identifies a specific starting point for the coordinates, measurement units (meters or US survey feet), and relationships to tectonic plate movement. The coordinate reference system is a key component of high-accuracy data collection.

Uinta transforms imported CRS data to WGS84. When data is exported, you can choose your desired CRS. (See Export Project, Template, or Data.)

Transformation of CRS (Import)

Files imported into Uinta are transformed to the WGS84 coordinate reference system.

Transformation of CRS to WGS84
SHP The imported CRS is auto-detected and appropriately transformed.
CSV The user designates the imported CRS.
KML The imported CRS is assumed to be WGS84 Geographic (4326).
GPKG The imported CRS is auto-detected and appropriately transformed.
NTRIP The user designates the imported CRS broadcast from the base when configuring NTRIP. (See Network RTK.)

RTK CRS (Incoming)

If you are using an RTK correction service (that is not Juniper RTK), your RTK provider may send the corrections in a different CRS. Ask your RTK provider which coordinate reference system they are using and include it when you add your network  RTK provider to your profile. (See Add an RTK Provider from Network RTK Settings.)

Uinta must store the coordinates for each item that you map. Uinta stores coordinates in WGS84 format. If your RTK provider is providing corrections from a different coordinate system and you enter that coordinate system when you add your RTK provider, then Uinta will transform the incoming corrections to WGS84 so a consistent horizontal datum is used for all data within the project. If you do not enter your RTK provider's CRS. Uinta will assume that it is WGS84. A mismatch could introduce error into your data. However, if you want to control all of the transformations of your data, do not set a coordinate reference system for your RTK provider, and Uinta will not transform it, but will treat it as WGS84 coordinates.

Display CRS

Although Uinta is storing the collected coordinates as WGS84 coordinates, if you prefer to see coordinate values displayed in a different coordinate system as you work, Uinta can do that. You will enter your preferred display in Location Settings > Coordinate Systems. (See Coordinate Systems.)

Note: The coordinate system that you choose to display does not impact the data that is collected, corrected, or stored.

Export CRS

When you export data with a customized report, you can specify the CRS exported with the data. (See Export Data with Customized Report.)

Uinta will transform the stored WGS84 data into the CRS that you choose.

Caution: If there is a mismatch between the coordinate system correction values provided by your RTK provider and the stored collected coordinate values, exporting to another coordinate system is not recommended as it is likely to introduce error.

To specify the coordinate reference system when exporting data:

  1. Open the project in either Map view or List view.
  2. (Optional) Choose the records you want to export.
Skip this step if you want to export all records.
    • In Map View, use the Select tools and then skip to step 4.
    • In List View, select the records directly from the list.
    • Alternatively, filter the project to display only records that match your criteria.
  3. Initiate the export.
    • Android and iOS—Open the menu and select Export.
    • Windows—Tap the export icon .
  1. Tap Customize Report.
  2. Select Coordinate Reference System. Choose one that is listed or Select Other.

When you select other, you can search for your desired CRS by SRID or name. You can also filter the CRS shown according to type.

Note: When exporting to DXF, select a projected coordinate system, such as UTM or your local state plane.

For instructions on exporting data, see Export Data with Customized Report.

If you know that you do not want Uinta to perform any data transformations, you can leave the Location Services > RTK/NTRIP profile > Coordinate Reference System field blank and the Export > Export Coordinate System field at the WGS84 Latitude/Longitude (default). As you make transformations to the data outside of Uinta, know that coordinates from your RTK provider are labeled WGS84, but are actually whatever the RTK provider sent them as. The collected data is WGS84 coordinate values.
